Embracing What's Here

I find the darkness approaches steadily
It waits, patiently, as I exist
As the time passes, it closes in slowly
And I fail to notice

My attention is on other matters
And it is subtle, cautious, careful
I am not disturbed until it is too close to matter
And I am surrounded, with no choice

As the silky tendrils wrap themselves around me
I return the embrace, welcoming my lover
It invades my being - my soul, my heart, my body
I shudder at the guilty pleasure it brings

Some would fight, others run
Not I, there is no denying it. Me.
I know the night, and it is mine
I wield it as a weapon, a shield, a mask

No one else matters while we are intimate
A touch, a smile, a word
All forgotten as I am taken and kept
We surrender to each other, my darkness and I
