10:25 am   Earthworm Jim.,..is back?!!

gamers
[pumpkin_man]

I got this from Gamespy.com

It's official: the heroic earthworm named Jim is squirming his way back into the limelight. Atari has revealed that it will be developing a collection of Earthworm Jim games for both handhelds and next-generation games for the next five years. For those of you too young to remember, Earthworm Jim was a popular side-scrolling action game developed by Shiny Entertainment. At its peak the series had its own Saturday morning cartoon show and a line-up of action figures.

So far, we know that the one of the new games will be in 3D, and many of the classic Earthworm Jim characters will be making a comeback, including Peter Puppy, Princecess-What's-Her-Name, and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt. Chances are the characters will undergo a slight makeover as well. Annoyingly, the official announcement is very sparce with details. No specific consoles are named and no release date is given. Looks like Jim's fans may be in for a long wait.

Edit-- I gotta find more about this. I remember when I had a sega...along with "The Punisher", "Earthworm Jim" was one of my favorites. I would love to see Jim make a comeback and hit next-gen consoles.

11:49 pm   Why It Didn't Work

pamcash
He asks me if I like hip-hop. Only a bit, the really alternative white kid stuff, like, um, Blackalicious. Well, he says he likes the Black Eyed Peas. I've never heard their music so I figure he knows more about it than I do.

He tells me that he doesn't drink. It makes me more attracted to him. He's told me that he's never had a drink. It makes me less attracted to him.

He tells me he graduated Sigma Cum Laude and he's rich. We went to see Syriana. He didn't understand the plot, like, at all.

He's a nerd and ridiculously attracted to me, going out of his way to get my attention. After I sleep with him, he says, "I'm not the type of guy to stick with one girl. I can't really be held down."

You: Arizona. Me: California. Us: Broke.

"I just want us to be, like, almost the same, but just friends." "You want to fuck me until someone better comes along." Silence.

"My girlfriend and I have a crush on you."

He gives me his credit card number so I could collect-call him for phone sex. I'm 17, he's 36 and it's AOL chat. If I were a lesser woman, I could have started an early criminal career. Thankfully I had really high self-esteem then.

He tells me that he had to pick up his Mom from prison once, and I smile, thinking "Thank god he's a bit fucked up."

He's the ugliest guy I ever saw, and he tells me that he usually likes much thinner, model-esque girls.

He's a total hottie, and he tells me I'm beautiful. I'm immediately suspicious and think he's trying to steal my nonexistant money. We total the car. I feel like a tool.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Next year, I meet someone. "What are you here for?"
"The love of the children (?)" He makes me laugh.
Ben, I love you. Thank you for making it work.

Hey everyone...I'm leaving to go to California tomorrow evening for a friend's birthday and was wondering if anyone knew of any little gift shops/boutiques around the downtown area that I could maybe go to over my lunch break for present ideas?

I work at 12th and Grand would like to stay within walking distance (but I'm willing to walk up to several blocks away/get in the car if need be...aka, if someone has an AWESOME place they know of)...Thanks!

John Dimatos's Epimetheus - A network of fire detecting sensors that transmit crucial data in real time.

Epimetheus is the feasibility prototype for a larger environmental framework that emphasizes the ability to monitor a site in real time.

Designed for deployment in public and private spaces by loosely organized groups of citizens, Epimetheus uses technology as a DIY layer on the physical environment that the citizen-scientist can deploy. By design, groups of citizens will be able to add new nodes to a pre-existing network using publicly available manuals, schematics and configuration settings. Once fully registered, an individual node will be viewable as part of a layer in Google Earth. Once viewable, the node as well as the entire network can be monitored remotely by the original group or individual as well as affiliated interest groups and local leaders.

Epimetheus uses a multi tiered approach to the communication of environmental information. Designed to accept multiple sensor technology such as UV, infrared, and smoke, the sensor units use advanced mesh networking and solar power to achieve grid autonomy. The gateway units are designed to aggregate data on the edge of the sensor networks from the deployed nodes in the forest. Protected from the harsh environmental conditions, the gateway units have access to the power grid and a cellular network. Utilizing off the shelf consumer phones, the gateway unit sends critical updates in the form of SMS texting to a third tier of the system: individual users, citizen action groups, and publicly viewable databases.

The act of localized deployment and open monitoring of a site can create a long lasting effect that transcends saving forests: Empowered civilians with a real sense of custody over a specific site.

10:39 am   Cone-Free Styling Products?

longhair
[fixed_air]

Hi all! I checked the FAQ and memories for a similar question and didn't find anything. Apologies, though, if this has already come up and I just missed it.

My hair is fine and weak, and I often use styling products (like gel and mousse) to thicken and protect it. However, I want to avoid -cones, and most products I've used are coney. Does anyone have any recommendations for products that add some texture but aren't filled with yuckiness? I know some of you use coconut or jojoba oil - is this a good, natural way to give my hair extra "oomph?" I love being kinder to my hair, but I hate that it's sort of boring sometimes.

I've switched to washing just every other day, but I still condition daily. I know that on the in-between days my hair has a little more texture, but it's still kind of unruly.

Tips? Suggestions? Thank you in advance!

09:24 am   mornings

sylvia101
The main character of the book i am reading now, The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas, summed it up pretty well:

Sometimes I wake up with such an immense sense of disappointment that I can hardly breathe. Usually nothing has obviously triggered it, and most times I can shake it off pretty quickly. After all, there is not much for me to be disappointed about. I sit up in bed slowly, feeling the disappointment trickle away like puddles after a rain shower. I think it is fair to say I hate mornings. I hate the honesty of the morning; the time before your consciousness switches on the light and gets rid of all the nasty shadows. Yuck. But my coffee's ok.

10:28 am   Honest Gas Gauge

davez
I am slowly getting use to my Elements (<--still needs a good nickname) gas gauge, in my old Venture I would fill it up and it would stay on F for a good 100 miles, then start to fall. By the time it reached half a tank, it would have used close to 2/3rd of the gas. The trip from half, to a quarter, to the warning light was pretty quick, usually within 50 miles.

But with the Element the needle hits the F when you fill it up, but doesn't stay there very long, by 75 miles it is already halfway to the half a tank mark (no actually 3/4 tank marking). In the old van I would still around the F mark. Oh well the trip from half to the light coming on (the 4 gallons left of 1/4th mark) does take allot longer in the Element then the van. Just something I have to get use too.

The nice thing is I get about the same amount of milage on a tank of gas between the Element and the old Venture. It is just the fact that I use 4 gallons less. Filling up the Venture was 16 gallons if I went to the warning light. At 4 bucks a gallon that would be 64 smackers. But since I am only putting in 12 gallons in the Element I am only having to pay 48 greenbacks per fill up.

Right now I am getting 24 MPG with my typical weekly drive, being mostly to work and back. I think it is a combination of getting some good highway miles on the trip to Grand Rapids and back, and myself adapting to driving it better.

Did I mention the gamerscore challenge that CMorrigu is competing in? If you are curious, follow along over here. 4 other people are mixing it up, meaning fierce competition and some creative trash talk. Currently CMorrigu is holding the number 3 spot in the group... decent. And while we have 4 days left, let's not procrastinate. Pick up that controller and get to unlockin'!

09:06 am   I am going to Hell and I don't want to but there is nothing I can do about it.

ludickid
I went out this morning, as I do every morning, to pick up my New York Times. I slipped off the blue plastic rain sack, tossed it in the garbage can near my bedroom window, and looked at the biggest above-the-fold headline. It was about the catastrophic earthquake in China that has killed the only children of many people, which I honestly am really very sad about.

This is what the headline said:

TINY BODIES IN A MORGUE

And I swear to God I did not want this to happen. My brain just forced it. I had no more control over it than I do breathing. Instantly, my brain started singing:

"Make me feel happy, make me feel fine."

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.

ただ、その顔ぶれの中でも特に、そのときそこにいたことを覚えている者ほど、七年経った今でも、わりと親しい。
What does the underlined part mean? If it were just もの I'd think it was some sort of nominalizer + ほど, and if the ほど weren't there I'd think the 者 was referring to the people there (which I still do). I dunno, that bit's confusing me.
And while I'm here, does anyone know of any good resources that compare kanji with similar meanings as well as readings, such as 見る and 観る, 聞く and 聴く, 会う and 逢う, etc?
Finally, is it legitimate to write 。。。 instead of ... or ...? Because every time I see that it annoys the heck out of me, but I don't want to get all grumpy about it when it turns out that that's perfectly legitimate. (And who knows, maybe ... isn't legitimate either, except in manga.)

07:05 am   Movie plot security threat contest winner

boingboing_net
Bruce Schneier has announced the winner of his annual "Movie Plot Threat" contest, in which his readers are invited to come up with ridiculous, improbable and frightening things that you could probably frighten people with enough that they're lured into buying some stupid product or giving up some essential liberty (or both). Here's the winning entry, from Aaron Massey (be sure to click through and check out the runners up, too!)
Many Americans were shocked to hear the results of the research trials regarding heavy metals and toothpaste conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, which FDA is only now attempting to confirm. This latest scare comes after hundreds of deaths were linked to toothpaste contaminated with diethylene glycol, a potentially dangerous chemical used in antifreeze.

In light of this continuing health risk, Hamilton Health Labs is proud to announce Tommy Tester Toothpaste Strips! Just apply a dab of toothpaste from a fresh tube onto the strip and let it rest for 3 minutes. It’s just that easy! If the strip turns blue, rest assured that your entire tube of toothpaste is safe. However, if the strip turns pink, dispose of the toothpaste immediately and call the FDA health emergency number at 301-443-1240.

Do not let your family become a statistic when the solution is only $2.95!

05:45 am   Crazy rasberry ants devour Houston's electronics

boingboing_net
Houston is a-swarm with "crazy rasberry ants" -- an exotic species that eats fireants and electronic equipment. The "crazy" part is that they kind of wobble and weave when they walk. They have multiple, exterminator-resistant queens, and are attacking the local animal population as well.
They have ruined pumps at sewage pumping stations, fouled computers and at least one homeowner's gas meter, and caused fire alarms to malfunction. They have been spotted at NASA's Johnson Space Center and close to Hobby Airport, though they haven't caused any major problems there yet.

Exterminators say calls from frustrated homeowners and businesses are increasing because the ants — which are starting to emerge by the billions with the onset of the warm, humid season — appear to be resistant to over-the-counter ant killers.

"The population built up so high that typical ant controls simply did no good," said Jason Meyers, an A&M doctoral student who is writing his dissertation on the one-eighth-inch-long ant.

It's not enough just to kill the queen. Experts say each colony has multiple queens that have to be taken out.

05:39 am   Electric house of the future: 1939's promise

boingboing_net
Popular Mechanics' August, 1939 feature "The Electric Home of the Future" features the kind of boundless, electrical future hovering on the horizon for the brave people of 1939.

In the not-distant future, the home may well be equipped with “mood control,” which is made possible by newly developed light sources. It’s possible that people will suit the light and color of their rooms to their moods. These new-type lamps produce colors of warm white, daylight white, gold, red, blue, pink and green. It’s up to the psychologists to figure out the proper combinations of colors to lift one’s spirits, when they are down, with a flood of brilliant light, or subdue a sense of excitement with soothing mellow light.

These new lamps are highly efficient colored-light makers, producing from ten to fifty times as much light per watt as has been possible with incandescent lamps. They utilize a very low-pressure mercury vapor discharge which produces ultraviolet radiations, giving little direct visible light or heat radiation. The inside surface of the glass tubes is coated with chemicals which glow when struck by invisible ultraviolet radiation. The combination of chemicals used in the coating of the lamp determines the resultant color.

It is even possible that in the future we may produce on a commercial scale similar lights by bombarding the fluorescent material of the lamps with short-wave radio beams.

Arduinonano

Just when you thought you had them all, the Arduino mutates yet again -

The new Arduino Nano is the smallest and most versatile Arduino board yet. Designed and manufactured by US-based Gravitech, it has all the functionality of an Arduino Diecimila in a compact, breadboard-ready design. The Nano includes an ATmega168 microcontroller (w/ bootloader), integrated USB (FTDI chip) w/ Mini-B jack, a full complement of i/o pins (including two more analog inputs than the Diecimila), an ICSP programming header, and on-board regulator.
Like the Arduino Mini, there's no room for a DC jack, but those extra analog pins are a nice touch. Other highlights include - auto power source selection (no need for an "EXT/USB" jumper), color-differentiated LEDs (green TX, red RX, orange pin13, blue PWR). And notice, in the upper-left, the long-awaited 'DORX' pin! (kidding, kidding) - Arduino Nano

The San Francisco-based Billboard Liberation Front has been transforming the world of advertising since 1977. When Austrian art-pranksters and regular BBtv guests monochrom recently visited the United States to spread their Sculpture Mob dogma, a historic meeting with the elusive BLF took place. BBtv's hidden cameras captured everything.

And in part two of today's BBtv episode, Xeni travels with the BLF and monochrom to document their first-ever joint exploit to build "The Great Firewall of China" around one of the Google signs on the internet giant's Mountain View campus. Hijinks ensued; dogs, cops, and GOOG security guards pursued; TV news crews newsed.

The goal of their "unpaid advertising services"? To draw attention to Google's role in online censorship within China. As it happened, this particular day was the same day of a Google shareholder meeting, during which related proposals came up for vote.

Christian Cerrito & Petra Farinha's Solar chandelier - A suspended solar/kinetic sculpture that gathers energy during the day, and dispenses light at night.

A kinetic mobile made of up of several independent light seeking, energy gathering BEAM robots. Each segment/robot of the chandelier will rely upon sensor input to move into an optimal position for gathering solar energy. The movements of each suspended robot will affect the positions of those that it is attached to, resulting in an active "fight" for light between the chandelier segments throughout the day. At night, the robots dispense the energy that they have gathered as light, the most successful segments staying lit the longest.

The solar chandelier provides a dynamic visualization of the normally static process of gathering solar energy. Users will witness parts of the chandelier moving and reacting as though simple living organisms, and directly benefit from the energy that they gather.

This may not be the best place to post this, but then again, it is kind of on topic...

What I would like to have made are stickers to place on these infected machines to warn my employees not to plug them in to the 'net till they're clean. (I hire complete n00bs and teach them...)

Ideally, I'd like them to be obvious, noticeable, and the message clear:

"This Computer is INFECTED.  DO NOT connect to the network." or something to that effect.

I'd also like them to have a graphic similar to yet distinct from the biohazard symbol.

A format like the European Hazard Symbols or ADR labels would be appropriate as would something along the lines of these

Yes, I would make these available to people who would want them at close to my cost (usually no more than a dollar or two each) plus the cost to ship them.

Any takers?

My favorite bit of trivia from the film The Birdcage is that the actors who perform the drag act were told only that they would be performing in heeled shoes.

As a rule, I don't bring the mayhem of my universe to people who rely on me to perform some specific function. Not for any other reason than society has a mental block on a very simple idea. Once I realized it was so prevalent, it became easier to do it alone than explain myself eighty-five times a day.

It's a simple concept that many people don't seem to understand:
We've all got problems.
We're all experts at dealing with our common problems.
Even if those common problems seem like uncommon emergencies for someone else.
For example, every day:
- A surgeon sees things that would make some of us pass out.
- A therapist talks to twenty people who would drive us crazy with their whining.
- A hospice nurse looks death in the face and wipes sweat from its brow.
