10:25 am Earthworm Jim.,..is back?!!
|
[pumpkin_man] |
I got this from Gamespy.com
It's official: the heroic earthworm named Jim is squirming his way back into the limelight. Atari has revealed that it will be developing a collection of Earthworm Jim games for both handhelds and next-generation games for the next five years. For those of you too young to remember, Earthworm Jim was a popular side-scrolling action game developed by Shiny Entertainment. At its peak the series had its own Saturday morning cartoon show and a line-up of action figures. So far, we know that the one of the new games will be in 3D, and many of the classic Earthworm Jim characters will be making a comeback, including Peter Puppy, Princecess-What's-Her-Name, and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt. Chances are the characters will undergo a slight makeover as well. Annoyingly, the official announcement is very sparce with details. No specific consoles are named and no release date is given. Looks like Jim's fans may be in for a long wait. Edit-- I gotta find more about this. I remember when I had a sega...along with "The Punisher", "Earthworm Jim" was one of my favorites. I would love to see Jim make a comeback and hit next-gen consoles. (Respond)

11:49 pm Why It Didn't Work
|
|
He asks me if I like hip-hop. Only a bit, the really alternative white kid stuff, like, um, Blackalicious. Well, he says he likes the Black Eyed Peas. I've never heard their music so I figure he knows more about it than I do.
He tells me that he doesn't drink. It makes me more attracted to him. He's told me that he's never had a drink. It makes me less attracted to him. He tells me he graduated Sigma Cum Laude and he's rich. We went to see Syriana. He didn't understand the plot, like, at all. He's a nerd and ridiculously attracted to me, going out of his way to get my attention. After I sleep with him, he says, "I'm not the type of guy to stick with one girl. I can't really be held down." You: Arizona. Me: California. Us: Broke. "I just want us to be, like, almost the same, but just friends." "You want to fuck me until someone better comes along." Silence. "My girlfriend and I have a crush on you." He gives me his credit card number so I could collect-call him for phone sex. I'm 17, he's 36 and it's AOL chat. If I were a lesser woman, I could have started an early criminal career. Thankfully I had really high self-esteem then. He tells me that he had to pick up his Mom from prison once, and I smile, thinking "Thank god he's a bit fucked up." He's the ugliest guy I ever saw, and he tells me that he usually likes much thinner, model-esque girls. He's a total hottie, and he tells me I'm beautiful. I'm immediately suspicious and think he's trying to steal my nonexistant money. We total the car. I feel like a tool. ________________________________________ Next year, I meet someone. "What are you here for?" "The love of the children (?)" He makes me laugh. Ben, I love you. Thank you for making it work. (Respond)

Hey everyone...I'm leaving to go to California tomorrow evening for a friend's birthday and was wondering if anyone knew of any little gift shops/boutiques around the downtown area that I could maybe go to over my lunch break for present ideas?
I work at 12th and Grand would like to stay within walking distance (but I'm willing to walk up to several blocks away/get in the car if need be...aka, if someone has an AWESOME place they know of)...Thanks! (Respond)

10:39 am Cone-Free Styling Products?
|
[fixed_air] |
Hi all! I checked the FAQ and memories for a similar question and didn't find anything. Apologies, though, if this has already come up and I just missed it.
My hair is fine and weak, and I often use styling products (like gel and mousse) to thicken and protect it. However, I want to avoid -cones, and most products I've used are coney. Does anyone have any recommendations for products that add some texture but aren't filled with yuckiness? I know some of you use coconut or jojoba oil - is this a good, natural way to give my hair extra "oomph?" I love being kinder to my hair, but I hate that it's sort of boring sometimes. I've switched to washing just every other day, but I still condition daily. I know that on the in-between days my hair has a little more texture, but it's still kind of unruly. Tips? Suggestions? Thank you in advance! |

09:24 am mornings
|
|
The main character of the book i am reading now, The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas, summed it up pretty well:
Sometimes I wake up with such an immense sense of disappointment that I can hardly breathe. Usually nothing has obviously triggered it, and most times I can shake it off pretty quickly. After all, there is not much for me to be disappointed about. I sit up in bed slowly, feeling the disappointment trickle away like puddles after a rain shower. I think it is fair to say I hate mornings. I hate the honesty of the morning; the time before your consciousness switches on the light and gets rid of all the nasty shadows. Yuck. But my coffee's ok. 10:28 am Honest Gas Gauge
|
|
I am slowly getting use to my Elements (<--still needs a good nickname) gas gauge, in my old Venture I would fill it up and it would stay on F for a good 100 miles, then start to fall. By the time it reached half a tank, it would have used close to 2/3rd of the gas. The trip from half, to a quarter, to the warning light was pretty quick, usually within 50 miles.
But with the Element the needle hits the F when you fill it up, but doesn't stay there very long, by 75 miles it is already halfway to the half a tank mark (no actually 3/4 tank marking). In the old van I would still around the F mark. Oh well the trip from half to the light coming on (the 4 gallons left of 1/4th mark) does take allot longer in the Element then the van. Just something I have to get use too. The nice thing is I get about the same amount of milage on a tank of gas between the Element and the old Venture. It is just the fact that I use 4 gallons less. Filling up the Venture was 16 gallons if I went to the warning light. At 4 bucks a gallon that would be 64 smackers. But since I am only putting in 12 gallons in the Element I am only having to pay 48 greenbacks per fill up. Right now I am getting 24 MPG with my typical weekly drive, being mostly to work and back. I think it is a combination of getting some good highway miles on the trip to Grand Rapids and back, and myself adapting to driving it better. (Respond)

CMorrigu held the Xbox button on his controller down for a few seconds and our adventure began! A gamer score of 25,612 is lighting the way. He rocked out to Outpost Kaloki X, and then it felt like he threw my controller and I was like, TAKE IT EASY SHEESH and we stopped.
Did I mention the gamerscore challenge that CMorrigu is competing in? If you are curious, follow along over here. 4 other people are mixing it up, meaning fierce competition and some creative trash talk. I went out this morning, as I do every morning, to pick up my New York Times. I slipped off the blue plastic rain sack, tossed it in the garbage can near my bedroom window, and looked at the biggest above-the-fold headline. It was about the catastrophic earthquake in China that has killed the only children of many people, which I honestly am really very sad about.
This is what the headline said: TINY BODIES IN A MORGUE And I swear to God I did not want this to happen. My brain just forced it. I had no more control over it than I do breathing. Instantly, my brain started singing: "Make me feel happy, make me feel fine." WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. |

ただ、その顔ぶれの中でも特に、そのときそこにいたことを覚えている者ほど、七年経った今でも、わりと親しい。
What does the underlined part mean? If it were just もの I'd think it was some sort of nominalizer + ほど, and if the ほど weren't there I'd think the 者 was referring to the people there (which I still do). I dunno, that bit's confusing me. And while I'm here, does anyone know of any good resources that compare kanji with similar meanings as well as readings, such as 見る and 観る, 聞く and 聴く, 会う and 逢う, etc? Finally, is it legitimate to write 。。。 instead of ... or ...? Because every time I see that it annoys the heck out of me, but I don't want to get all grumpy about it when it turns out that that's perfectly legitimate. (And who knows, maybe ... isn't legitimate either, except in manga.) |

Houston is a-swarm with "crazy rasberry ants" -- an exotic species that eats fireants and electronic equipment. The "crazy" part is that they kind of wobble and weave when they walk. They have multiple, exterminator-resistant queens, and are attacking the local animal population as well.
They have ruined pumps at sewage pumping stations, fouled computers and at least one homeowner's gas meter, and caused fire alarms to malfunction. They have been spotted at NASA's Johnson Space Center and close to Hobby Airport, though they haven't caused any major problems there yet.Link (Thanks, Bonnie!) (Respond)

Just when you thought you had them all, the Arduino mutates yet again - The new Arduino Nano is the smallest and most versatile Arduino board yet. Designed and manufactured by US-based Gravitech, it has all the functionality of an Arduino Diecimila in a compact, breadboard-ready design. The Nano includes an ATmega168 microcontroller (w/ bootloader), integrated USB (FTDI chip) w/ Mini-B jack, a full complement of i/o pins (including two more analog inputs than the Diecimila), an ICSP programming header, and on-board regulator.Like the Arduino Mini, there's no room for a DC jack, but those extra analog pins are a nice touch. Other highlights include - auto power source selection (no need for an "EXT/USB" jumper), color-differentiated LEDs (green TX, red RX, orange pin13, blue PWR). And notice, in the upper-left, the long-awaited 'DORX' pin! (kidding, kidding) - Arduino Nano Update: The Nanos ship from Gravitech in June - Arduino:Blog

02:24 am BBtv - Google's "Great Firewall of China": Fun with the Billboard Liberation Front and monochrom
|
|
The San Francisco-based Billboard Liberation Front has been transforming the world of advertising since 1977. When Austrian art-pranksters and regular BBtv guests monochrom recently visited the United States to spread their Sculpture Mob dogma, a historic meeting with the elusive BLF took place. BBtv's hidden cameras captured everything. And in part two of today's BBtv episode, Xeni travels with the BLF and monochrom to document their first-ever joint exploit to build "The Great Firewall of China" around one of the Google signs on the internet giant's Mountain View campus. Hijinks ensued; dogs, cops, and GOOG security guards pursued; TV news crews newsed. The goal of their "unpaid advertising services"? To draw attention to Google's role in online censorship within China. As it happened, this particular day was the same day of a Google shareholder meeting, during which related proposals came up for vote. Link to Billboard Liberation Front press release, and here's monochrom's side of the story. Here are previous BBtv episodes with monochrom.

03:56 am Warning: Cyber Hazard
|
[iarwain] |
This may not be the best place to post this, but then again, it is kind of on topic...
I own a small computer shop. We often get people bringing in their systems to get cleaned of virii and other assorted malware. What I would like to have made are stickers to place on these infected machines to warn my employees not to plug them in to the 'net till they're clean. (I hire complete n00bs and teach them...) Ideally, I'd like them to be obvious, noticeable, and the message clear: "This Computer is INFECTED. DO NOT connect to the network." or something to that effect. I'd also like them to have a graphic similar to yet distinct from the biohazard symbol. A format like the European Hazard Symbols or ADR labels would be appropriate as would something along the lines of these. Yes, I would make these available to people who would want them at close to my cost (usually no more than a dollar or two each) plus the cost to ship them. Any takers? |

It's a simple concept that many people don't seem to understand: We've all got problems. We're all experts at dealing with our common problems. Even if those common problems seem like uncommon emergencies for someone else.
